Hey guys, we all know what a big deal your high school prom is.

We also understand the hoops you probably had to jump through to get your dream girl to agree to be your prom date. Or maybe you and your date are "just friends," but you'd like to up the ante by showing her what a gentleman you can be. All things considered, prom night pressure is on. Will you be a frog or her knight in shining armor? Here are some pointers to help you make your date feel like a true "prom princess":

Picking Up Your Date

Make sure you arrive at your date's house a few minutes early, dressed in age-appropriate formal wear that conforms with your school's dress-code guidelines for prom. Leave the over-the-top outfits and the overly gelled, spiky hair at home. Remember, you want to exude "gentlemanly" confidence, something that can't be done if your outfit steals the show.

According to Elaine Swann, a.k.a. "The Etiquette Lady," you should be polite and pleasant with your date's parents, and use eye contact. Speak clearly and avoid using slang.

It's always in fashion to bring a corsage for your date. Fresh flowers are a sure way to make your date feel special. Always pin the corsage to the upper left part of your date's dress. If you brought her a wrist corsage, put it on her left wrist.

It's likely that your date's parents will want to take pictures, so be prepared. If your party consists of several couples, it might be best to have all the parents meet at one house for photographs.

Mind Your Manners
  • Open all doors, including the car door for your date.
  • If you're traveling in a limo, guys allow your date to enter first, and then give her your hand to help her out.
  • At dinner, let your date pick her seat, pull out her chair, and allow her to order first. Always make sure you pull out your date's chair to seat her as the evening progresses.
  • Mind your table manners: Napkin in your lap, elbows off the table; use your silverware from the outside in.
  • When walking outside with your date, always make sure to walk on the side of her that is closest to the street.

It's also important to note that drug and alcohol use should be avoided. The risks associated with alcohol and drug use could ruin an otherwise special evening. Also, don't pressure your date for sex or other intimate activities. Remember: a true gentleman is always sensitive to the needs of his date. Make sure to follow her lead at all times.

Keeping your head in the game with these simple, common sense pointers will ensure that your prom night is something you will remember for the rest of your life.
